About Mrs. Owens…
Mrs. Owens has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from the University of Maryland at College Park. Her principal instrument was piano and she studied with Evelyn Garvey and Santiago Rodriguez. She taught instrumental music in Montgomery County Public Schools for 6 years until she retired to stay at home with and homeschool her children. She founded her private piano studio in 1996.
Mrs. Owens is an active member of the National Guild (Teaching Division of the American College of Musicians) and the Maryland State Music Teachers Association (division of the Music Teachers National Association). Through these memberships, she takes advantage of opportunities provided for professional development and adjudication, festival, and competition opportunities for her students. She is also a member of Vibrant Music Teaching and Top Music, which are professional development, learning, and networking communities for music teachers that include access to training and resources developed by some of the most excellent piano teachers around the world.
Piano teaching is her main focus, but on the side, she accompanies instrumentalists for recitals and solo festivals, plays for the occasional wedding and church service, and plays flute in her church orchestra. She also directs her church's teen choir and teaches music history and appreciation classes in her homeschool community.
Teaching Philosophy…
All people of all ages can learn and benefit greatly from a good music education. What is most important is that we enjoy making music and grow in appreciation of its beauty. Mrs. Owens believes that can be achieved not only by teaching the fundamental skills and proper technique of piano playing, but also by exposing students to all types of music and the theory and history behind it. She also likes to encourage the creative side of music with improvisation, arranging, and composition.
Furthermore, Mrs. Owens is sensitive to each student’s learning style and pace. Therefore, she can tailor her teaching techniques to the needs, interests, and goals of each student. If one wants a highly competitive atmosphere, and another wants a more relaxed setting, she can accommodate both.
Mrs. Owens believes that making music is not only satisfying in itself, but can positively affect every other aspect of life and learning. Her hope is that every student who takes lessons with her will come away with a love for music that will last a lifetime.
